Due to Bigfoot and similar cryptid hominids having sightings and lore all over the US, we’ve combined the links for museum, events and media references.
Legends of upright hominid cryptids are not an isolated thing, while the US does have an overwhelming number of Bigfoot, and Bigfoot adjacent, sightings. Similar cryptids have been reported in Canada, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia, among so many others. For this reason, when you see Bigfoot mentioned in the following, assume we mean Bigfoot and all aliases and related/similar cryptids: the whole spectrum of upright hominid cryptids..The name changes due to region: Bigfoot, Fouke Monster, Honey Island Swamp Monster, Mogollon Monster, MoMo, Skunk Ape, Selbyville Swamp Monster, Taku-He, Tenn. Wildman, Woods Devil, Woodwose, Yeren, Yeti, Yowie and even the diminutive Albatwitch. This list can get even longer if you were to include the upright canid cryptids, such as Beast of Bladenboro, Beast of Bray Road, Dogman, Rougarou, Shunka Warak’in and White Thang.
While the specifics do vary widely, from teleporting abilities to telepathy, the basic Bigfoot identifiers seem to remain the same: upright hominid, more ape than man, tall (6 foot plus), covered in hair, arms longer than proportional, a memorable odor (usually unpleasant), and a heart-stopping cry or howl. Opinions are strongly divided between whether they are of a more curious nature, just wanting to be left alone, interdimensional beings, or aggressive protectors of the wild. One thing is for sure, Bigfoot is easily the most widely-known and easily recognizable cryptids around and they show up in media and stories as many visages from the blood-thirsty monster to slapstick side-kick to mascot and even the world hide-n-seek champion.
